With redware, the use of a simple clear-glaze over the clay, is most commonly found on utilitarian pottery. Due to the way the iron oxide reacted to the temperature and atmosphere in the kiln, the same glaze could vary in color from orange to salmon, to red, to brown, to black, black-green or green with orange dots.
