One pottery historian stated that the use of the word “jar” was not commonly recorded in the old pottery shop ledgers. Most often, they were called “pots” or “covered pots”. The word “jar” is of French and Spanish origins. These jars copy a very common American shape from the late 18th century. They are 6, 8 and 10 inches tall.
